About Me

My name is Omar, and my hometown is Fort Lauderdale, Florida. I graduated from the University of South Florida with a Bachelors of Science degree in English Education in 2017. After six years teaching English, Theater, ESOL, Debate, and Reading in various roles, I began my graduate school journey. With the love and support of my family, I earned my Masters of Education degree with a Curriculum Specialization and made the transition into higher education.

Since then, I have enjoyed the privilege of working with Student Affairs professionals, serving as President of the Colleges of Central Florida Career Consortium 2022-2023, and as faculty advisor for several clubs and student organizations, including Saint Leo University's first eSports team.

My Story

My life and professional experiences have made for interesting inspirations to draw upon. I am a first-generation college graduate, disabled person, and I grew up in a mainly Spanish-speaking family. Through these experiences, I developed resourcefulness, perseverance, an authentic belief in human potential, and the importance of compassion.

Throughout my academic career, teachers have made a positive impact on my life. Growing up in a single-family household, I looked to my teachers for guidance and motivation. Upon graduating, I knew I wanted to teach. After graduating from USF and the College of Education Honors program, I went on to teach every grade from 6th through 11th.

Shortly after the Covid pandemic, I began working at the higher ed level, serving as Assistant Director of Career Services and Adjunct Communications Instructor. In these roles, I developed a passion for supporting others in their career journeys. I also served as club advisor to several student organizations and helped to establish Saint Leo University’s first eSports team. While I have enthusiasm for most programs that improve the student experience, the eSports program remains close to my heart.

In my personal life, I enjoy time with my family, raising my sons, gardening, gaming, and attempting artistic endeavors. To that end, I have tried my hand at painting, digital arts, and writing short stories. While they have all been to varying levels of success, I draw on these experiences throughout my professional life. Sometimes we learn the most from failure.

Lastly, I enjoy collaborating on various levels. Reach out if you are looking to join forces for a good cause.
